TALLAHASSEE, FL — April 18, 2025
Florida State University was rocked by tragedy Thursday morning when a gunman opened fire near the student union, killing two individuals and injuring at least six others in a midday shooting that shocked the campus and surrounding community.
Police identified the shooter as Phoenix Ikner, 20, the son of a sheriff’s deputy and a presumed FSU student. The shooting began just before noon, when Ikner reportedly exited an orange Hummer and began firing into a crowd near the student center.
FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower confirmed that officers engaged and quickly apprehended the suspect. Ikner was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities stated that two victims died on scene, and six others were transported to local hospitals. Tallahassee Memorial Hospital reported that all gunshot victims are currently in fair condition. A seventh person was also injured attempting to flee the chaos.
While the identities of the victims have not yet been released, officials have clarified that the deceased were not FSU students.
Further background on the suspect reveals Ikner was previously involved in the Leon County Sheriff’s Youth Advisory Council, raising concerns about his access to weapons. A former classmate from a political group alleged that Ikner held white supremacist views, though authorities have yet to confirm a motive.
This incident adds to growing concerns about safety on college campuses. FSU students, staff, and loved ones are being offered counseling and resources in the wake of the violence.
Escape Live will continue to follow this developing story.
